AI for clinics and dental practices: safe, practical uses

Clinics and dental practices carry heavy admin and strict privacy duties. AI can lighten the admin, but only where patient data is handled in line with your local health-privacy law. This guide covers the uses that make sense and the questions to ask first. It is not legal advice.

Admin uses with low risk

  • Drafting recall and reminder message templates (sent by your booking system).
  • Answering staff questions from your own policy and procedure documents.
  • Summarising monthly numbers: appointments, no-shows, treatment acceptance.
  • Drafting job ads and onboarding checklists.

Before any patient data goes near AI

Ask the vendor, in writing:

  • Where is data stored and processed, and is it used to train models?
  • Will they sign the agreement your law requires (for example a business associate agreement in the US)?
  • Can access be limited by role, and is every action logged?

Keep clinical judgement human

Diagnosis, treatment decisions and anything a patient will rely on medically must stay with qualified staff. Use AI to prepare and organise information, never to make the clinical call.
